Context and problem statement
Section titled “Context and problem statement”The source must be readable and auditable by anyone, contributions must be easy, and commercial clones of the product should not be free to appear the week after a release. No licence protects an idea; only the expression of the code and the trademark are protectable.
Decision
Section titled “Decision”The application is licensed under the Functional Source License 1.1 with MIT future licence (FSL-1.1-MIT): use, modification, contribution and non-competing deployment are allowed; offering ByteBureau as a competing commercial product is not; each version becomes MIT two years after its release. @bytebureau/plugin-api, @bytebureau/protocol and @bytebureau/client are MIT. Contributions are accepted under the Developer Certificate of Origin. The name and logo are protected by TRADEMARK.md. The licensor is Ondřej Misák; a future legal entity may become licensor of subsequent versions without affecting earlier releases.
Consequences
Section titled “Consequences”ByteBureau is “fair source” under a licence the OSI has not approved: no OpenSSF Best Practices badge, no GitHub Accelerator eligibility, and some contributors may decline; forks and users are never stranded thanks to the MIT conversion.
